Caught up with my friend Carl, we met while both of us were motorcycling at the “Snake”, Rt 421 in North Carolina a month ago. Great dinner and conversation with him tonight at Anchorage Alehouse. Carl rode his BMW motorcycle all the way from Vermont to Alaska…ironman quality! Think next go around for both of us…we are adventuring together!
Carl is more of a road rider and when he showed up with a dirty bike it surprised me. He said he hit some gravel roads around Valdez, Alaska. We are planning to do the Transamerica trail in 2017.
He recently saw the movie “A Story Worth Living” and has never rode dirt before, after the movie he now wants to hit the dirt! The Transamerica trail goes from Asheville, North Carolina to the Pacific Ocean, all dirt, no pavement. Carl is talking about buying a Gs 800….maybe I will too?
I arrived one day before the ride actually begins specifically to visit Providence Alaska Hospital’s Child Life Department.
There are currently six teens receiving treatments for cancer. So I went as an ambassador for Bite Me Cancer to personally deliver bags to the hospital. I left each teen a bag with Joanna, a Child Life Specialist, who took the time with me to discuss the role she plays. Which is basically, comforting and explaining what is about to happen to a child/teen as they are administered treatments. Along with the doctors and nurses, she is there when they administer the actual treatment, chemo, etc. Joanna interacts with the parents as well. I told her it takes bravery to do her job, that is right there on the font lines of the battle along with nurses, doctors, worried moms and dads. I walked away from this somber front line adventure on day one realizing how important background support is for anyone undergoing cancer diagnosis and treatment.
No riding yet, just love and support! Day one is in the books.
When you’re “dirt rich” (Brothers Osborne), you stay at the Puffin Inn Annex in Anchorage….cheapest place in town! Didn’t see any cars up on blocks so it just may be ok?
Team Bite Me Cancer saddled up and ready to ride north til we can’t ride no more…literally.
Together, we have raised close to $6,000.00 and sure to climb to goal of $10,000.00 at this rate by the end of the campaign. Just got to keep up the momentum….don’t hesitate to join our Team Bite Me Cancer! Its currently 28 degrees and snowing today where I’m going, great for motorcycling!!! North to Alaska…
Stopped by Anne Arundel County Cable channel today on my way to the airport to do a segment on “Week in Review” about my Bite Me Cancer Alaskan Adventure Fundraiser! Segment should air on Friday, June 3rd, 2016. I’m told it will also be posted on YouTube and I will do my best to post my segment as soon as it’s available. Want to say a big thank you to hosts Dave Abrams and Kristen for inviting me! What a great send off!
Getting all my gear sorted out for my big Alaskan Adventure. Helmet – check, GoPro – check, Burley Boots – check, Official Chad Reed Shoulder Brace – check, Gloves x 4 – check! Happy to say that over 80% of my ride wear was dirt cheap, used and from EBay. A man’s gotta do what a mans gotta do when he’s had two kids in college! Now it’s North to Alaska…counting down!
Also very excited to announce that we crossed over the $5,000.00 mark on our Bite Me Cancer Fundraiser! Whoop! Whoop! That means we are over halfway to reaching our goal and I haven’t even hit the road yet!
Don’t hesitate to consider joining our Team Bite Me Cancer fundraiser…you can be part of our team by donating as little as 1 cent per mile, that’s just $18.85!! Whether you’re for or against Bernie, he’s proved the power of many small donations adding up to a lot!! I need to feel the BURN so I don’t freeze in the tundra!!
You will find the link to donate to the Bite Me Cancer throughout the blog but just to help spell it out for you…. http://www.crowdrise.com (search for Rich Raley)
